Notice of Privacy Practices
Emotion Lab Therapy — M. Baron, LCSW
Effective November 2, 2026
THIS NOTICE DESCRIBES HOW HEALTH INFORMATION ABOUT YOU MAY BE USED AND DISCLOSED AND HOW YOU CAN GET ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION. PLEASE REVIEW IT CAREFULLY.
Our commitment to your privacy
Emotion Lab Therapy is committed to protecting the privacy of your health information. We are required by law — the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Maryland’s confidentiality laws governing health and mental health records — to keep your protected health information (PHI) private, to give you this notice of our legal duties and privacy practices, and to follow the terms of the notice currently in effect.
How we may use and disclose your health information
For treatment. We may use your health information to provide, coordinate, and manage your care — for example, to plan your treatment, and, with your knowledge, to consult with other professionals involved in your care.
For payment. We may use and disclose your information so that the services you receive can be billed and paid for — for example, providing information a payer requests, or preparing a statement or superbill at your request.
For health care operations. We may use your information for our own operations — for example, quality review, training, licensing, and the business functions needed to run the practice.
As required or permitted by law. Maryland and federal law require or allow disclosure in certain situations, including:
- Reporting suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult;
- When there is a serious threat to your health or safety, or to the health or safety of another person;
- In response to a court order or other lawful legal process;
- For certain public health and oversight activities required by law.
With your written authorization. Other uses and disclosures — including most uses of psychotherapy notes, and sharing information with schools, family members, attorneys, or others at your request — will be made only with your written authorization. You may revoke an authorization in writing at any time, except to the extent we have already acted on it.
Psychotherapy notes
Notes a therapist keeps separately from the clinical record (“psychotherapy notes”) receive special protection under HIPAA and Maryland law. They will not be used or disclosed without your specific written authorization, except in the limited circumstances the law permits.
Your rights regarding your health information
You have the right to:
- See and copy your health information in our records, with limited exceptions;
- Request corrections if you believe information in your record is incorrect or incomplete;
- Request restrictions on certain uses and disclosures of your information (we will consider every request; if we agree to a restriction, we will honor it as the law requires);
- Request confidential communications — for example, that we contact you at a particular phone number, email, or address;
- Receive a list (accounting) of certain disclosures of your information made without your authorization;
- Get a copy of this notice at any time, including an electronic copy;
- File a complaint with us or with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services if you believe your privacy rights have been violated. You will not be retaliated against for filing a complaint.
Telehealth
If your care includes telehealth sessions, the same privacy protections apply. We use reasonable safeguards for electronic communication, and we will discuss any limits of electronic communication with you as part of your care.
Parenting classes
Emotion Lab Therapy’s parenting classes and courses are educational programs. Attending a class does not by itself create a therapist–client relationship, and information you choose to share in a class setting is not treated as part of a clinical record. This notice applies to clients receiving therapy services.
Website and email
Please do not send urgent or emergency information through this website or by email. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
Changes to this notice
We may change the terms of this notice, and the changes will apply to all health information we maintain. The current notice will be posted on this website, and a copy is available on request.
